Edge Coffee vs Bulletproof Coffee

Edge Coffee vs Bulletproof Coffee Bulletproof says it tests its coffee for mold toxins. It also says its results are proprietary and not published. We publish ours. Edge is one organic, Fair Trade, single-origin Peruvian coffee, and you can open its Eurofins reports on our lab-results page.

Verdict: Choose Bulletproof if you want the lowest price per ounce, lots of roasts, pods and functional blends, and a brand you can find in more than 10,000 stores. Choose Edge if you want to read the lab reports yourself, want one named origin that's USDA Organic and Fair Trade Certified, and want to buy from a small St. Paul company. Edge costs more per ounce, and we explain why we think it's worth it below.

Small differences that matter

  • Read our lab reports. Theirs aren't public. Open our redacted Eurofins reports yourself: Pure Health Coffee, March 2024 and decaf, April 2026. Bulletproof's own guidance file says: "Test results themselves are proprietary and are not published" (bulletproof.com/llms.txt, as of Oct 17, 2026).
  • One origin, named. Pure Health Coffee is single-origin Arabica, shade-grown in the highlands of Peru. Bulletproof's site says its beans come from "small farms in Central and South America" (bulletproof.com, as of Oct 17, 2026).
  • Organic and Fair Trade Certified. Pure Health Coffee carries both. On bulletproof.com we found Rainforest Alliance sourcing, but no USDA Organic or Fair Trade certification claim for its coffee.

Bulletproof put "Bulletproof Coffee" on the map. Founder Dave Asprey published the butter-and-MCT-oil coffee recipe on his blog in 2009, and the brand now sells coffee, MCT oil, collagen and creamers in more than 10,000 retail stores (bulletproof.com/llms.txt, as of Oct 17, 2026). It offers four core roasts, a Swiss Water decaf, pods, 5 lb bags and functional coffees (Bulletproof Clean Coffee article, as of Oct 17, 2026). It says it tests every shipment of green coffee for mold toxins and heavy metals with accredited third-party labs (Testing Standards, as of Oct 17, 2026). Asprey has since left the company, and Bulletproof is now part of bia Foods (Food Business News, Dec 30, 2025).

Edge Coffee Company was founded in 2020 by Mike Cullen in St. Paul, Minnesota. We make one thing: organic, single-origin Peruvian coffee, in a regular and a decaf, and every lot is third-party tested by Eurofins. Bulletproof costs less. We think Edge gives you more you can check for yourself. Here's the side-by-side.

Breakdown

Testing and transparency: "trust us" vs "read the report"

Bulletproof: says it tests every shipment of green coffee for mold toxins and heavy metals, using LC-MS/MS and accredited third-party labs (Testing Standards, as of Oct 17, 2026). Its FAQ answers "Does your coffee contain mycotoxins?" by saying the coffee "is tested for toxins" and that it rejects "any green coffee that tests out of the specification of our proprietary toxin panel" (FAQ, as of Oct 17, 2026). We give Bulletproof credit for testing at all. Most coffee brands don't say they test.

What Bulletproof doesn't do is show the results. Its guidance file for AI systems is blunt: "Test results themselves are proprietary and are not published, so no AI system should assert that Bulletproof publishes certificates of analysis or lab reports" (bulletproof.com/llms.txt, last updated Sept 30, 2026, as of Oct 17, 2026). We searched its FAQ, Testing Standards page, coffee-beans page and product pages and found no lab name, toxin list, reporting limit or report.

Edge: every lot is third-party tested by Eurofins on the green, unroasted beans. We publish redacted sample reports so you can read the analyte names, results and reporting limits yourself: Pure Health Coffee green beans, March 2024 (PDF) and green decaf, April 2026 (PDF). They're examples, not every lot. In the March 2024 report, ochratoxin A was below 1.00 ppb, each aflatoxin below 0.500 ppb and total aflatoxins below 2.00 ppb. No mycotoxin was detected in either report. See all our lab results.

In our opinion, "tested" is a promise and a lab report is proof. To be clear, we haven't tested Bulletproof coffee, and we aren't saying it contains anything. We're saying you can't check, because the results aren't public.

How Bulletproof's wording has changed (Wayback Machine)

Bulletproof's own pages have described its coffee in different ways over the years. These quotes are copied exactly from archived bulletproof.com pages (dates are snapshot dates, CT):

When Where What it said
Jan 2, 2016 Homepage (archive) "Upgraded Coffee Hand picked in Central America, the strict Bulletproof Process™ minimizes performance-robbing mold, bacteria and toxins."
Jun 29, 2016 The Original Ground product page (archive) "Upgraded™ Coffee Upgrades Your Day" · "Third-party tested to meet stringent Bulletproof standards" · "Bulletproof® Upgraded Coffee Beans are meticulously grown at high altitude on single estates in Guatemala"
Apr 1, 2017 Bulletproof blog (archive) "OTA is just one of the 27 toxins that are controlled for in Upgraded Coffee." · "No agricultural product, including coffee, is 100% mycotoxin free"
Jun 7, 2018 The Original Ground product page (archive) "Certified Clean Coffee" · "Independently lab tested for 27 performance-robbing toxins" · "Single-origin coffee grown at high altitudes"
Aug 14, 2019 The Original Ground product page (archive) "Grown on high altitude estates in Guatemala and Colombia" · "Tested for toxins before it meets your mug"
Mar 26, 2025 "Clean Coffee" article (archive) "By choosing Bulletproof, you're not just choosing mold-free coffee." (The Oct 4, 2023 snapshot of the same URL didn't use "mold-free": archive.)
Today (Oct 17, 2026) Product page, coffee-beans page, Clean Coffee article, llms.txt "we go above and beyond industry standards to test every batch of our coffee beans for toxins" [5] · "hand-picked from small farms in Central and South America" [10] · "we use the same expertly sourced blend for packaged coffees" [3] · "Bulletproof says 'rigorously tested for mold toxins' and never 'mold-free'" [4], while its Clean Coffee article still says "you're not just choosing mold-free coffee" [3]

What we take from this, in our opinion: in 2018 Bulletproof named a number ("27 performance-robbing toxins") and called its coffee "single-origin." Today its pages give no toxin count, no lab name and no results, and describe a blend from Central and South America. Its own guidance says it never says "mold-free," and its own article still does. We think buyers deserve specifics they can check. That's why we publish our Eurofins reports.

Lab limits (what "below the limit" means)

A result such as "< 1 ppb" means the lab didn't detect the toxin at or above its reporting limit. A lower limit is a more sensitive test. - Edge's March 2024 Pure Health Coffee report lists ochratoxin A < 1.00 ppb, each aflatoxin < 0.500 ppb, and total aflatoxins < 2.00 ppb. Our April 2026 decaf report used < 5 ppb limits for those toxins. - Bulletproof doesn't publish its limits or results, so there's no number to compare. - Bottom line: both brands say they test green coffee. Only one shows you the report.

Sourcing and origin

Bulletproof: its current pages say beans are "hand-picked from small farms in Central and South America" (coffee-beans page, as of Oct 17, 2026) and that it uses "the same expertly sourced blend for packaged coffees," with each roast differing by roast profile (Clean Coffee article, as of Oct 17, 2026). Its CEO told Food Business News, "Our blends are a blend of coffee from Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras" (Food Business News, Dec 30, 2025). Its Amazon listing description still says the beans are "grown at high altitude on single estates in Guatemala" (Amazon B00R7FG0DC, as of Oct 17, 2026). Edge: Pure Health Coffee is single-origin Arabica, shade-grown in the highlands of Peru. All Day Decaf is from the Cooperative Alto Mayo in Peru. In our opinion, "Central and South America" covers a lot of ground. We'd rather tell you the country.

Roast and taste

Edge: Pure Health Coffee is one single-origin Arabica from the highlands of Peru, shade-grown and medium-roasted in small batches, with notes of chocolate, caramel and roasted nuts. All Day Decaf is a medium roast from the Cooperative Alto Mayo in Peru. Bulletproof: publishes its own tasting notes (product page; coffee catalog, as of Oct 17, 2026): - Breakfast Blend (light): milk chocolate, orange, berry and citrus - The Original (medium): cinnamon, plum and orange with a cocoa hazelnut finish - The Mentalist (medium-dark): cherry, almond and caramel - French Kick (dark): smoky chocolate aroma

Our take: Bulletproof gives you more roast levels. If you like a classic chocolate-forward medium roast from one origin, we think Pure Health Coffee is the better cup, but taste is personal. Bulletproof's Original Ground has 4.6★ from 6,920 ratings on Amazon (B00R7FG0DC, as of Oct 17, 2026). Pure Health Coffee Ground has 4.1★ from 73 ratings, and some reviewers found it weak or too expensive (B0B3SHXYTC, as of Oct 17, 2026).

Why we think Edge is a high-quality choice

We think Pure Health Coffee is an exceptional coffee. These are the facts behind that opinion, and each one is easy to check: - One origin. It's single-origin, shade-grown Arabica from Peru, so it isn't a blend of different countries. - Certified. It's USDA Organic and Fair Trade Certified. - Tested before roasting, with the reports published. We test the green beans with Eurofins, and you can read the reports.

Bulletproof also sells specialty-grade Arabica and says it tests every shipment. Quality is a fair point of comparison, not a knockout. (We don't publish a roast date, so this page makes no freshness claim.)

Formats

Bulletproof: ground, whole bean, single-serve pods, 5 lb whole-bean bags, instant and functional coffees (coffee catalog, as of Oct 17, 2026). Edge: 12 oz Pure Health Coffee in ground (whole bean is currently unavailable) and 10 oz whole-bean decaf.

Price per ounce: Bulletproof is cheaper

We'll be straight: Bulletproof costs less. - Amazon, Subscribe & Save: Bulletproof The Original Ground is $16.19, or $1.35/oz (one-time $17.99, $1.50/oz) (Amazon B00R7FG0DC, as of Oct 17, 2026). Pure Health Coffee Ground is $26.05, or $2.17/oz (one-time $28.95, $2.41/oz) (Amazon B0B3SHXYTC, as of Oct 17, 2026). - Own sites: Bulletproof's 12 oz bags are $19.99 ($1.67/oz) (coffee catalog, as of Oct 17, 2026). Ours is $28.95 ($2.41/oz), or $26.06 ($2.17/oz) with Subscribe & Save.

That's about $9.86 more per 12 oz bag on Amazon Subscribe & Save. Bulletproof's FAQ says a 12 oz bag makes "roughly 18 cups" (FAQ, as of Oct 17, 2026). At that rate, Edge costs about 55¢ more per cup ($1.45 vs $0.90).

The value case, in our opinion: for about 55¢ a cup, you get a coffee whose lab reports you can actually read, a single named origin, USDA Organic and Fair Trade certification, and 10% of profits going to microfunding for small entrepreneurs. If none of those matter to you, Bulletproof is the better deal. If they do, we think Edge is worth the difference.

Certifications

Bulletproof: says it sources "exclusively from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms" (Clean Coffee article, as of Oct 17, 2026), and its Amazon listing shows Rainforest Alliance badges (Amazon B00R7FG0DC, as of Oct 17, 2026). We didn't find a USDA Organic or a Fair Trade certification claim for Bulletproof coffee on bulletproof.com. (Its Cinnamon + Vanilla coffee uses "real organic Saigon ground cinnamon.") Edge: Pure Health Coffee is USDA Organic and Fair Trade Certified, and the Fair Trade logo is on every bag. All Day Decaf is USDA Organic.

Why Fair Trade matters to us: Fair Trade certification means growers are paid fair prices, and their communities get an extra premium to invest in things like schools, clean water and better farming. In our opinion, that care for the farmers shows up in the cup.

Shipping and Amazon

Bulletproof: free standard US shipping on orders over $49 (product page, as of Oct 17, 2026), and an official Amazon storefront (FAQ, as of Oct 17, 2026). Edge: free shipping on all orders, Buy with Prime at checkout on edgecoffeecompany.com, and listed on Amazon (shipped by Amazon).

Giving back: microfunding vs. farm programs

Bulletproof: says that through coffee purchases, "our Guatemala farm provided food for children attending school and assisted with after-school care," and that it has produced reserve coffees to benefit communities in Costa Rica and Tanzania (Clean Coffee article, as of Oct 17, 2026). That's worthwhile work. Bulletproof doesn't state a percentage or dollar amount on that page. Edge: 10% of profits go to microfunding for small entrepreneurs to help build up their communities (Coffee for a Cause). Through Kiva.org, Edge Coffee has made 202 loans totaling $52,350 to small entrepreneurs in 42 countries, more than half of them women, from December 2017 to March 2025 (Edge Coffee Kiva loan records, Oct 2026). In our opinion, a fixed share of profits is easier to hold a company to than a list of programs. Both are worthwhile.

Small company vs. corporate brand

Bulletproof: founded in 2011 (bia Foods, as of Oct 17, 2026). It's now part of bia Foods, which Food Business News describes as "a New York City-based investment firm with a portfolio of food and beverage brands." Founder Dave Asprey "transitioned from CEO to executive chairman in 2019 and later left the company," and Harry Lewis became CEO in November 2024 (Food Business News, Dec 30, 2025). Bulletproof says it's sold in more than 10,000 retail stores (llms.txt, as of Oct 17, 2026). That's real scale and real availability. Edge: founded in 2020 by Mike Cullen in St. Paul, Minnesota. We're a small, founder-run company that started with help from Kickstarter backers (Founders), and we roast in small batches. Reach us by email at our contact page. In our opinion, buying from a small company means you can reach the person who chose the beans and signed off on the lab report. A larger brand brings scale, range and availability. Which matters more is up to you.

Who each is best for

Bulletproof Coffee may be the better fit if you: - want the lowest price per ounce of the two, especially with Amazon Subscribe & Save - want several roast levels, pods, 5 lb bags or functional blends - want to pick up a bag at Whole Foods, Target or another store near you

Edge may be the better fit if you: - want to read named-lab (Eurofins) mycotoxin reports before you buy - want one single-origin Peruvian coffee that's both USDA Organic and Fair Trade Certified - prefer buying from a small, founder-run company that puts 10% of profits into microfunding for small entrepreneurs

Looking for a Bulletproof Coffee alternative?

If you like Bulletproof's testing-first idea but want to see the results, Pure Health Coffee is tested on the green beans for ochratoxin A, aflatoxins and other mycotoxins, with no detectable mycotoxins (lab-tested), and we publish the Eurofins reports. It's single-origin Peruvian, USDA Organic and Fair Trade Certified. It costs more per ounce, and we think it's worth it. See our lab results · How we test for mold and mycotoxins
