Lab Results: Eurofins Mycotoxin Testing

Key takeaway: Every lot of Edge Coffee is third-party tested by Eurofins. Below are two sample reports (examples, not an exhaustive list): Pure Health Coffee green beans (March 2024) and green decaf (April 2026). In both, every mycotoxin tested, including ochratoxin A and aflatoxins, was below the lab's reporting limit. (49 words)

100% Mold & Mycotoxin-Free. Based on third-party Eurofins testing: no detectable mycotoxins. In our sample Pure Health Coffee green-bean report (Mar 2024), ochratoxin A was below 1 ppb and total aflatoxins below 2 ppb; in our sample green decaf report (Apr 2026), both were below 5 ppb. Every lot is third-party tested by Eurofins. The two reports below are sample reports, not an exhaustive list.

"<" means the result was below the lab's reporting limit: nothing was detected at or above that amount. The reports give results in ppb and µg/kg, which are the same unit (1 µg/kg = 1 ppb).

Does roasting remove mycotoxins? Partly, and that's why we test green beans

Roasting reduces some mycotoxins, but not all of them, and not by a predictable amount: - Ochratoxin A (OTA) is partly reduced, and how much varies widely. A review of roasting studies found most reported reductions of 60% or more (van der Stegen et al., J Agric Food Chem 2001). On an industrial line, roast-and-ground coffee still kept about 16% of the OTA from the green beans (Blanc et al., J Agric Food Chem 1998). In another study, roasting cut OTA by 66.5% on average, but the reduction was "heterogeneous" from sample to sample (Pérez De Obanos et al., Food Addit Contam 2005). - Roast level matters. OTA reduction depended on how severe the roast was and on how contaminated the beans were to begin with; espresso-style roasts showed reductions above 90% (Romani et al., J Agric Food Chem 2003). - Aflatoxins and others vary too. In naturally contaminated coffee, traditional roasting followed by brewing reduced aflatoxins by about 40–62% and OTA by about 59–65%, depending on roast level. That still left measurable amounts (Al Attiya et al., PLoS One 2021). - Prevention starts before roasting. Good farm, drying and storage practices help keep OTA from forming in the first place (López-Rodríguez et al., J Fungi 2024).

So Edge tests the green, unroasted beans. We don't count on the roaster to clean up a problem. We check the beans before roasting, when any mycotoxins that formed during growing, drying or storage would be at their full level.

About the PDFs: these are Edge's own Eurofins reports, posted as sample reports with only the client home address redacted. Eurofins' notice on each report ("Reports shall not be reproduced except in full without written permission…") is left as printed.

How do you read a coffee lab report (COA)?

Analyte: the specific compound being measured (e.g. ochratoxin A). Result: the amount found. A "<" means below the reporting limit (not detected at that level). Reporting limit / LOQ: the smallest amount the method can reliably measure. Lower limits mean a more sensitive test. ppb (µg/kg): parts per billion, or micrograms per kilogram of coffee. Method / reference: the published analytical procedure the lab followed (e.g. LC-MS/MS). Sample description: what was tested (here, green beans).

Quick check for any coffee lab report: (1) is it from an independent lab? (2) does it list each mycotoxin by name? (3) are the reporting limits shown? (4) does it say what sample was tested and when?

FAQ

Is Edge Coffee tested for mycotoxins? Yes. Every lot is third-party tested by Eurofins. The two reports here are sample reports, and both found no detectable mycotoxins.

Which mycotoxins were tested? Ochratoxin A, aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2, deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisins, T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin and zearalenone. The 2024 panel also included aflatoxins M1 and M2.

What does "< 1.00 ppb" mean? The lab found no ochratoxin A at or above 1 part per billion, the lowest level its method reports.

Why do the two reports have different limits? They used different Eurofins test panels and methods. Both are listed in full in the PDFs.

Why is the address blacked out? The reports were addressed to our founder's home. We redacted only his home address; all results, lab details and signatures are unchanged.

Why do you test green beans and not roasted coffee? Roasting reduces some mycotoxins but not all, and the reduction varies widely between roasts and batches, so we test the beans before roasting.

Results relate only to the samples tested, as stated on each Eurofins report. Educational food-quality information, not medical advice.
